Enter sales revenue and the total costs for the same period. Margin is the share of revenue remaining as profit. Include all relevant costs if you want net margin.
Formula and example
margin = (revenue - cost) / revenue × 100

Common questions
Is profit margin the same as markup?
No. Margin divides profit by revenue; markup divides profit by cost. A cost of 80 and a selling price of 100 give a 20% margin and a 25% markup.
Does this calculate gross or net margin?
It depends on the costs you include. Cost of goods sold gives gross margin. Include all relevant business expenses for a net-margin estimate, using a consistent accounting period.
