After a crypto loss, a message saying “we found your funds” can feel like a way out. That is exactly why it deserves a careful check. A second scam often begins when someone offers certainty at the moment you most want it.
What is a crypto recovery scam?
It is an offer to retrieve lost cryptocurrency that is used to obtain another payment, sensitive information, or wallet access. The FBI’s recovery-fraud warning describes companies demanding fees, producing unreliable tracing reports, or falsely claiming official connections.
A transaction may be visible on a public blockchain without being recoverable by the person showing you that transaction. A screenshot with arrows is not proof of authority over an exchange account or wallet.
Five warning signs to pause for
- A stranger contacts you immediately after you post about a loss.
- They promise a guaranteed result before examining the facts.
- Each payment leads to another supposed release, clearance, or tax payment.
- They discourage you from contacting an exchange or reporting the incident.
- They ask for your recovery phrase, private keys, or remote access.
An upfront fee alone does not establish that every professional service is fraudulent. The point is to verify the provider, written scope, costs, and limitations independently. Do not treat a badge, testimonial, or claimed government connection as verification.
Build a useful incident record
Create a private timeline with the date of first contact, the website used, and what you were asked to do. Save transaction hashes, receiving addresses, amounts, networks, receipts, emails, and chat exports. Keep original files where possible. Do not post identity documents or wallet secrets in public appeals for help.
A clear record helps an investigator understand the sequence. It also makes it easier to spot when a new contact is merely repeating details you already shared publicly.
Who should you contact?
If a payment involved an exchange, bank, or payment provider, use its official support channel promptly and ask what options remain. Report to the appropriate police or cybercrime authority in your country. People reporting to US authorities can use the FBI’s cryptocurrency reporting guidance. Reporting does not guarantee reimbursement.
How to avoid being targeted again
Review the original approach using our crypto scam warning signs guide. Before responding to a new offer, use the crypto safety checklist. If the offer asks for wallet secrets, read our seed phrase safety guide before taking another step.
Can a recovery company reverse a blockchain payment?
Do not assume it can. Tracing a transfer, identifying a service, and obtaining a lawful recovery are different tasks. Ask for an explanation of exactly what is being offered and avoid anyone selling certainty.
